A Canadian version was bound to appear, and sure enough we now have Penguin Canada’s Extraordinary Canadians, edited by John Ralston Saul. The 1999 launch of the Penguin Lives series, which includes short biographies of everyone from Marcel Proust to Elvis Presley, proved to be a useful corrective to the trend toward massive biographies. ![]()
